I expected plenty of family drama because that's what this series does so well. What I didn't expect was one reveal that had me staring at the page wondering, "Did that really just happen?" Lani Lynn Vale has a way of pulling the rug out from under her readers, and With Spite reminded me exactly why I keep coming back to her books. Huxley and Bernice's story had everything I love. I own a small drawer of bookmarks. Ribbon ones. Le I own a small drawer of bookmarks. Ribbon ones. Leather ones. A couple of those beautiful metal ones people give as gifts because they know I read. And somehow, almost every time, I still reach for a plain white envelope. Not even a nice one. Just whatever's closest on the desk. There's something about the shape of it holding a page open just right, and the fact that I can scribble a thought on it if one hits me mid-chapter, that keeps me coming back to it over the pretty ones.
