Hailey knows she's being watched. Knox knows that Hailey knows she's being watched. Knox knows that she knows. And apparently we're all just going to carry on like this is a perfectly reasonable way to begin a romance. 😂 That setup was what hooked me on They Know If You've Been Bad or Good. Knox originally started watching Hailey because he was concerned about her safety, but sir, we have clearly moved beyond neighborhood watch. I liked him anyway. This is a morally gray romance, so I'm obviously using a different measuring stick here. Once everything was out in the open, I actually liked that Hailey was allowed to make her own choices about Knox rather than having him decide what their relationship would be. Hailey and I did have a brief falling out somewhere around the middle of the book. She made a couple of decisions that had me staring at my Kindle wondering what exactly she thought she was doing. She eventually won me back, although I still reserve the right to question her decision-making skills. 😂 Then Alta Hensley surprised me with the why choose element. I did NOT know that was coming. And it worked. The tension between the three characters was probably my favorite surprise of the entire book because their dynamic became more interesting as it developed. Plus, there is plenty of spice once everybody starts figuring out exactly what they want. This is set around Christmas, and we do get some cute holiday markets and festive moments, but don't expect Christmas to be the main event. These people are far too busy with stalking, kidnapping, relationship complications, and increasingly questionable decisions for that. This was my second Alta Hensley book and my first from this series. I didn't realize it was book three when I picked it up, and I was completely fine starting here. I never felt lost or like I needed the previous books to understand what was happening. Sometimes you want a sweet Christmas romance. Sometimes you want kidnapping and a stalker. Apparently if you accidentally start a detective a Apparently if you accidentally start a detective agency, eventually people expect you to solve actual crimes. Who knew? 😂🔎 A woman believes her brother's death wasn't an accident. Her questions send Emersyn and Wyatt into the world of funeral homes, suspicious deaths, and undercover investigating. Meanwhile, I'm still trying to figure out whether Emersyn actually wants to be a detective. She argues about the rules for becoming a PI, wants a say in everything, and then seems perfectly happy to let Wyatt and seventeen-year-old computer genius Theo handle the serious detective work. Until she throws herself headfirst into danger. That's also why she works in this strange little team. She's good with people and notices when something feels wrong. Theo has the computer skills. Wyatt has the investigative drive. Together, they're starting to look suspiciously like a real detective agency. The Deco Mirage crew is back too, and I love these people. Leona, Bitty, Jemma, Theo, and the rest have become a found family for Emersyn and Livvy, whether Emersyn knows what to do with all that help or not. I also appreciate that Sarah Fox hasn't forgotten Emersyn is grieving. She's raising her brother's daughter while still mourning him herself, and those feelings don't disappear just because there's another mystery to solve. And Wyatt? Sir, I see you. The slow burn is BURNING. The banter is still fun, but there's something softer underneath it now, especially after those kisses in the first book. I'm ridiculously invested in watching these two figure themselves out. 😂🔎 Rom-Com Mystery 🕵️‍♀️ Amateur Sleuths 📋 Fake Detective Agency Turned Real 🤝 Coworkers / Partners 💕 Slow-Burn Chemistry ⚰️ Funeral-Home Mystery 🤎 Found Family 🥸 Undercover Investigation I would read this series in order because the relationships, Emersyn's story, and everything happening with the Deco Mirage crew build from book one. Completely practical, right? 🤭💍 Except Chase and Abi have chemistry that absolutely no one is going to mistake for convenient. As the Whispers Echo was my first book from Steffanie Blais, and these two had me laughing so much. Abi has a comeback for every one of Chase’s charming lines, while Chase seems to enjoy finding new ways to get a reaction out of her. Their banter was easily one of my favorite parts. Then we start seeing what they both keep hidden. Chase is more than the easygoing playboy everyone expects him to be, and Abi has spent far too long believing she has to take care of herself because no one else will. Watching the Wild family make room for her got me more than once. And while all of THAT is happening, there’s still the mystery surrounding Wildhaven and Wild Industries. I was keeping track of suspects and feeling pretty good about a few of my theories.
