I wasn't even supposed to read this book. I appli I wasn't even supposed to read this book. I applied for a future N. von Wolf release, somehow ended up on the list for These Tears instead, and figured I'd give it a try. Five stars later, I'd like to thank whoever made that mistake! Leah immediately had me on her side. She's intelligent and observant, and I loved how she processes information instead of suddenly becoming some fearless captive-romance heroine who always knows exactly what to do. Then there's Elias. Welp. 🖤 My relationship with this man was complicated. I went from wanting Leah far away from him to yelling "I CAN FIX HIM" at my Kindle. No, I cannot. The psychological side of this story is what really hooked me. Pay attention because details matter, and some things aren't what they initially seem. I don't want to say much more because discovering those pieces is half the fun. The Norwegian setting adds to the isolation, the tension keeps building, and once I started, I read straight through until I finished. This is DARK, though. Definitely check the content warnings before reading because the captive and psychological elements aren't just window dressing. What would you do if you went to sleep and woke up What would you do if you went to sleep and woke up seven thousand years later? Evelyn Bishop doesn't exactly get time to figure that out. She was placed into cryopreservation against her will and wakes on Ganymede with a new body, surrounded by robots, cyborgs, cloning, and technology she could never have imagined. The Rebirth Foundation has created something that looks remarkably close to paradise. You already know where my suspicious reader brain went with that. What's the catch? 😂 What fascinated me most wasn't actually the technology. It was discovering that seven thousand years of progress apparently hasn't done much about greed, obsession, or the desire for power. This was my first Stephen Piper book, and I really enjoyed uncovering this strange new world alongside Evelyn.
