Review
This was my first book in the series, and while it’s clear there’s a lot of history behind these characters, I was still able to follow the main storyline and enjoy the experience. That said, I do think reading the earlier books would add more depth and context, especially when it comes to the larger cast and ongoing conflicts.
The story centers on Jed, an immortal assassin tasked with carrying out a deadly mission, and Paige, a powerful and evolving being created for destruction. Their paths collide in a way that quickly becomes complicated, emotional, and full of impossible choices. The tension between them is strong from the start, and their connection develops under intense and dangerous circumstances.
Paige is a particularly intriguing character. She’s not just powerful—she’s changing, struggling with what she is becoming and what that means for the world around her. Watching her grapple with those changes added a compelling emotional layer to the story. Jed, on the other hand, is torn between loyalty, family, and the feelings he develops for Paige. His internal conflict is a driving force throughout the book and adds to the overall tension.
The plot itself is fast-paced and filled with action, betrayal, and high stakes. There’s a strong sense of urgency running through the story, with plenty of twists and difficult decisions that keep things interesting. The world-building is detailed and complex, though at times I felt like I was missing some background information that longtime readers of the series would already know.
The romance is intense and layered with conflict, making it both compelling and emotionally charged. It’s not an easy or straightforward relationship, which adds to the overall impact of the story.
Overall, this was an engaging and dramatic read with strong characters and a gripping premise. While I enjoyed it as a newcomer, I’d definitely recommend reading the series in order to fully appreciate the depth of the world and its characters.
