I read the first three books in this series and then somehow skipped all the way to book eight. Thankfully, A Cup of Conspiracy made it incredibly easy to slip right back into Lily Tweed’s world. I remembered why I liked her almost immediately.
Lily runs the local tea shop, but I’m beginning to think amateur detective might as well be printed on her business cards. The woman cannot leave a suspicious situation alone. When someone is arrested for the latest murder in Plumpton Mallet, everyone should be able to get on with their lives. Lily isn’t convinced the police have the right person, though, and we all know what that means. She’s going snooping.
I love that about her. Lily notices the little things that don’t quite add up, and once something catches her attention, she’s going to keep pulling at the thread until she figures out where it leads. This time, those questions begin uncovering secrets that quite a few people would prefer stayed buried.
The mystery kept me guessing, which is exactly what I want from a cozy mystery. I had my suspicions along the way, but I wasn’t confident enough to start congratulating myself. Every new piece of information seemed to give me another reason to question what I thought I knew.
I did have a few moments when I wondered what the actual detectives were doing while Lily was busy solving their case for them. She certainly seemed to be putting in enough investigative hours to earn a paycheck. Then again, half the fun of a cozy mystery is watching the amateur sleuth figure out what everyone else has missed.
Coming back to Plumpton Mallet was another highlight. I love a cozy mystery where the town becomes part of the reason you keep reading the series, and this one has that feeling. The tea shop, familiar faces, village gossip, and Lily’s tendency to find trouble make it the sort of place I enjoy returning to, even with its rather unfortunate murder rate.
I was also impressed by how easily I could jump from book three to book eight. There were obviously things that had happened while I was away, but J. New gave me enough information to understand where everyone was now without stopping the mystery for pages of backstory.
Apparently skipping books four through seven wasn’t my smartest reading decision. Now I want to go back and find out exactly what Lily has been getting herself into while I’ve been gone.
