All that remains are ashesโ€ฆ
Fighting fires is in his blood. Itโ€™s more than a jobโ€”itโ€™s part of who Carter Collins is. Everything was going according to plan until one fateful night. Now with only his brothers at the Sunnyville Fire Department and his grandmother to answer to, Collins is content with life the way it isโ€”but then she comes along.

Natalia Vasquez took a position at the Sunnyville Hospital to leave her old life behind with hopes to escape the permanent ache in her chest. When a fire destroys her apartment, a strikingly handsome firefighter comes to her rescue.

With no choice but to move again, Natalia isnโ€™t thrilled to find that the heroic ass is her new neighbor.

Will the tension burning between them be enough to rekindle the ashes that smolder inside of them?

I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This is the first book in K.Brombergโ€™s multi-authored Everyday Heroes World. Howevr I will say that I enjoyed it. This is the story of firefighter Carter Collins, and ER nurse Natalia Vasquez.

Carter lost the love of his life and his brother two years prior to where we are in this story. He is still struggling to move beyond that tragic night. Natalia is struggling as well. Nothing has been going right for her. Her apartment catches fire and afterwards she accepts an offer from an elderly woman to move in with her. The women ends up being none other than Carter’s grandmother.

Carter and Natalia are both attempting to figure out if they can have a relationship. Carter is broken and Natalia has her own issues. Things aren’t easy and I love the way they navigate their way through the heartbreak to find something special.

Thereโ€™s the sweet, lovely Lolly, but with her is that pendejo from last night who automatically assumed I was illegal and didnโ€™t speak English. I raise my chin up and enter the room. Iโ€™m a professional, after all. Lolly deserves my attention and to get the best care, so Iโ€™m going to focus only on her.

Lolly is sitting on the bed and perks up when she sees me, โ€œNatalia! Iโ€™m so lucky to get you again. How are you?โ€

Giving her a wide smile and keeping my eyes completely focused on only her, I walk to stand next to her on the opposite side of the pinche idiota firefighter who is looking ruggedly handsome in blue jeans and a fitted T-shirt. โ€œIโ€™m well, thank you. Iโ€™m glad to see you, but Iโ€™m concerned to see you here again. Are you still having issues with your blood pressure?โ€

โ€œI fainted again. I think I overworked myself. I got up early this morning to feed the birds, and then I got to messinโ€™ with my flower bedโ€ฆโ€

โ€œLolly, I told you Iโ€™d handle the yard stuff. I was coming over.โ€

โ€œI know, but Iโ€™m not an invalid, Carter!โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t say you were.โ€

โ€œYou were implying it!โ€

โ€œNoโ€ฆno, I was not. Stop putting words in my mouth and listen.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you take that tone with me! You think because youโ€™re six four now that you can speak to your grandmother with that tone?โ€

Grandmother? This sweet woman? โ€œIโ€™m surprised such a sweet lady as yourself has this for a grandson.โ€ As soon as the words are out, I cringe. Oh no, no. So not professional.

Lolly beams. โ€œOh, Natalia, you are my favorite around here. I donโ€™t even like the hospital, but you more than make up for it.โ€

โ€œNataliaโ€ฆwait a minute.โ€ Two large hands grab my shoulders and spin me around. What the hell? Carter leans down so weโ€™re face to face. โ€œItโ€™s you! Natalia Vasquez.โ€

โ€œVasquez. And si seรฑor. I help her, yes?โ€ I give him a condescending smirk.

He drops his hands and stands up straighter. โ€œYou speak English.โ€ He looks me up and down, I notice his eyes linger longer on my curves. โ€œAnd youโ€™re a nurse?โ€

โ€œRegistered Nurse, thank you very much.โ€ I cock an eyebrow. Iโ€™m normally not hung up on titles. But heโ€™s insulted me, and he needs to know what a fool heโ€™s been. โ€œSurprised?โ€

โ€œTo find you? Yes. That youโ€™re a beautiful, educated woman in a career for helping others? No.โ€

I laugh. I actually burst out laughing. โ€œYou donโ€™t even know me! Nice try at redeeming yourself from being an assuming, egotistical man last night.โ€

โ€œIโ€“Iโ€“ โ€

Lolly slides off the bed and comes to stand between us, โ€œWhat is she talking about, Carter?โ€

I cross my arms and raise a brow at him again. He huffs. โ€œLast night there was a fire at Nataliaโ€™s apartment.โ€

โ€œMy goodness, Natalia! Are you all right, sweetheart? How frightening.โ€ Lolly turns back to her grandson, โ€œBut what did you do? You saved her, right?โ€

Firefighter Douche puffs out his strong chest, โ€œYes, I did.โ€ He narrows his eyes at me. โ€œI saved her.โ€ He looks back at his grandmother. โ€œThen I tried to check on her and she wouldnโ€™t speak to me. She would only address the EMT in Spanish,โ€ he cuts his eyes to mine, โ€œso how was I supposed to know she knew any English? I was worried that you were in trouble or scared.โ€

I slowly nod my head and bite my bottom lip. โ€œYes, yes, I was. I was in trouble and also scared becauseย my apartment was collapsing above my head and fire was raining down.โ€

About Gail Haris

Gail Haris believes in fairytales, love, and laughter as the best medicine.

She was born and raised in a small town in the Midwest. After graduating with a degree in Mass Communications, Gail went on adventures traveling in America and Europe.

But her favorite adventures are the ones where she gets lost in a book.

Her love for reading and traveling lead her to attend book conventions. Those conventions gave her the encouragement she needed to combine her passion for creativity and storytelling. Using coffee and her imagination, she loves writing contemporary romances that blend laughter and true love out of every day chaos.

When Gail isnโ€™t day dreaming in front of her computer, sheโ€™s busy raising her two daughters with the man of her dreams. She loves traveling with her family, binge watching television series with her husband, singing Disney songs with her daughters, and having huge family and friends get-togethers that involve lots of food and usually a cake.

She hopes by following her own dream of becoming an author, she can set an example to her daughters that dreams can become a reality. Maybe she can encourage you too.

Never stop believing in love, dreams, and yourself. And coffeeโ€ฆdonโ€™t give up on coffee and books ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. I tried to vote for Ashes on goodreads but not sure I did it correctly. I usually say that mysteryโ€™s and thrillers are my favorite genres however contemporary romance and suspenseful romance are right up there with mysteryโ€™s and thrillers. Thanks for this review. Otherwise I may not have come across this book.

  2. Sounds like an Everyday Hero story I need to read, thanks for sharing your review and have a wonderful weekend!
