Worth the Fight by Anna Hackett | Book Review

I knew I was going to like Cole long before this book ever started. There was something about him in the previous books that made me curious, and now that I've finally gotten his story, I can honestly say it was worth the wait.Worth the Fight by Anna Hackett | Book Reviewfive-stars

She needs me to fight for her.

Cole

Iโ€™m no hero. Iโ€™m a former mercenary and retired assassin. Iโ€™m rough, I live in the darkness, and keep the demons at bay by fighting in the underground Las Vegas fight rings.

Then I see her.

Sheโ€™s offered up as a prize. Sheโ€™s young, pretty, and far too innocent.

Sheโ€™s everything Iโ€™m not.

Iโ€™ll fight for her, then Iโ€™ll set her free.

And Iโ€™ll keep my hands to myselfโ€ฆno matter how much I want to touch her.

Lili

I shouldnโ€™t have been surprised when my deadbeat dad sells me to a ruthless businessman to pay his debt. Now, Iโ€™m the prize for a deadly illegal fight and Iโ€™m terrified.

Until I hear the fighter known as the Wolf will fight.

I know Cole Black is quiet, intense, and dangerous, but something tells me I can trust the scarred fighter.
But when he gets me free of the ring, thatโ€™s when my real troubles begin.

That businessmanโ€ฆhe wonโ€™t let me go.

Now, Iโ€™m being hunted and the only person who can keep me safe is Cole.

But I soon learn Cole has his own secrets, his own burning need for revenge, and I might end up caught in the crossfire.

my review

Lili has spent her entire life learning she can’t depend on her father. Just when she thinks he can’t disappoint her any more than he already has, he proves her wrong by selling her to settle one of his own debts.

Thankfully for her, Cole arrives before things get any worse.

Cole is exactly the kind of hero I love reading about. He’s protective without trying to control Lili, and even though he rescues her, he never treats her like she’s helpless. What stands in his way isn’t an outside enemy. It’s himself. He carries so much guilt over the things he’s done that he’s convinced Lili deserves someone better.

Too bad Lili has already made up her mind.

I loved her determination. She doesn’t scare easily, and she refuses to let Cole push her away. Every time he tried to build another wall between them, she quietly knocked it back down. She saw the man beneath all the guilt and never stopped reminding him that he was worth loving.

The suspense kept the pages turning as Cole worked to bring down Goodyear and search for Lili’s friend. There was enough action to keep the story moving, but it never took the spotlight away from Cole and Lili’s relationship. Watching them slowly build trust with each other was my favorite part of the book.

One of the reasons I keep coming back to Anna’s books is that her heroes feel like real people. They’re tough when they need to be, fiercely loyal, and completely devoted once they fall. Cole fits right alongside my other favorites.
