Series: The McLaren Mysteries #10
Genres: British Mystery

One dark night artist Craig Saxton went missing from his village. His body was found thirty-two hours later in the river, floating like a bobber on a fishing line. Rumors swell like tidal waves: did his ex-wife or his fiancée’s father kill this likeable young man? Or was it simply a case of jealousy by the village’s other artist? Now, two years later, Craig’s fiancée hopes ex-police detective Michael McLaren can find out. From speaking to villagers, McLaren quickly realizes that what appears to be a straightforward investigation is fast becoming as tangled as fishing lines. Are the fish poaching incidents, the reappearance of the local ghost, and assaults on him merely to muddy the investigative waters, or are they connected to Craig’s death? McLaren has his hands full. They become even fuller when a nemesis from his past appears one night, bent on revenge. And the inevitable struggle opens a new future for one man…and leaves the other empty handed.

I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I am actually a day late getting this posted due to being the hospital. So for that I must apologize to the author. This was my first book by her and since I love British Mystery I knew it was right up my alley. Now this is book ten in a series but I will tell you that I had no problems with it. You don’t need to read the previous books in order to read this one.

We find ourselves following along with former Inspector Michael McLaren as he takes on a cold case. Even though he is still dealing with the death of his fiancé, he takes on the Craig Saxton’s case when the latter’s fiancé asks him to investigate his murder. I will say that what is suppose to be a sleepy town is anything but sleepy. That one of the things I love about British Mystery it takes what we think we know and turns us on our heads.

This was a well written book that I am so thrilled to have had the chance to read. There is plenty of mystery and when I thought I had figured out who the murderer was I was proven wrong.

The man frowned and seemed to tower above her. He took an eternity to answer. “Why are you inquiring?”

“I met him the other day. I’d heard about him before that. He impressed me with his knowledge. I’d like to know more of his background.”

“Why not ask Mr. McLaren?”

Victoria gave a tight-lipped smile and shrugged. Her thumb stroked the back of her ring. The gem had let her down. Moonstone was linked to feminine energy. It brought healing, nourishing the wearer and returning her to her complete self. It was the moon’s gem and imparted the curative water. She needed McLaren in her life and needed the benefits of the moonstone. How would she survive without either of them? She coughed and slid her fingertip onto the stone. “I did ask him. But he’s too modest. He wouldn’t tell me anything.”

“Well, I’d take that as a strong hint, wouldn’t you? Mr. McLaren obviously doesn’t want to talk about himself. You’d be best to drop it.”

“I just thought that you might know him and could—“

“I’m sorry. Even if I did know him, I wouldn’t give out private information. It’s nothing to do with you personally, please understand.”

“Sure. Department policy. Sorry to bother you.” She stepped out of the van, aware of the thud of her heart and the tears in her eyes. One good thing: it was nearly dark. No one could see her crying.

About Jo A Hiestand

A month-long trip to England during her college years introduced Jo to the joys of Things British. Since then, she has been lured back nearly a dozen times, and lived there during her professional folk singing stint. This intimate knowledge of Britain forms the backbone of both the Peak District mysteries and the McLaren cold case mystery series.

Jo’s insistence for accuracy, from police methods and location layout to the general feel of the area, has driven her innumerable times to Derbyshire for research. These explorations and conferences with police friends provide the detail filling the books.

In 1999 Jo returned to Webster University to major in English. She graduated in 2001 with a BA degree and departmental honors.

Her cat Tennyson shares her St. Louis home.

Mia

An island fling was the last thing I expected when I agreed to spend a month on a tropical island with Graham and Soraya as nanny to their sweet little boy. I was planning to relax with the family, enjoy the sun, and get a break from law school...

Then a shirtless, tanned Adonis runs onto our beach and into my life.

JT is mysterious, rugged, and his gruff exterior should have sent me running in the opposite direction. But something about the man excites me, challenges me to push past my insecurities. And though I don't see myself as a "fling" kind of girl, maybe it's just what I need to move on from my painful past. The trouble is JT has quickly imprinted himself on my soul, and saying goodbye to him is going to break me.

JT

Going back to the island, the only place I felt like myself, was a no-brainer. Not just somewhere to seek refuge from business, family, and especially women. It's a place of serenity...to clear my head and get rid of the anger of betrayal and figure out what I want to do with my life.

Then Mia happens, forcing her way into my heart. Like a violent storm that rushes in, wreaking havoc but ultimately ushering in a new dawn. She sees things in me I never knew existed. But our worlds are spinning in different directions, and no matter how badly I want to hang on, the force pulling us apart might just be too strong for both of us.

Life isn’t fair.

If anyone on Earth should know that, it’s Milena Semyonov.

She’s suffered blow after blow, and the hits just keep on coming.

Just when she’s sworn off being happy, that maybe being numb is the better way to navigate life, she meets him.
Cutter Carson Clayborne.

The man that finally shows her how a real man is supposed to treat her.

Just when she didn’t think life could get any worse, the man that abused her as a young, impressionable teen is back, showing her that life can, in fact, get worse.

When she’s ready to quit, Cutter is there, making sure that she knows that he’ll be there, whether she wants him there or not.

He is her husband, after all. And the unlikely pair have an understanding that they’ll stay married for two years, make a baby, and join two crime syndicates in unholy matrimony.

Cutter has other plans, though. He only agrees to the original plan to make her his.

He won’t ever give her up. What’s his stays his. And there’s not a man on the earth that’ll ever touch Milena again. Not with Cutter alive and able to take out anyone that tries.

Broody. Hot. Intoxicating.

Nastya Semyonov first met Haze at a bar, but for Haze Hopkins, duty calls before either can act on their desires. He’s gone without a glance back, leaving her thinking that maybe all the hot looks were only one-sided.

Fast forward to the next day, Nastya hitches a ride to her car that she left behind the night before, only to run into the same man from last night.

Neither one truly thinks before they act, and they spend a hot fifteen minutes in a fast-food restaurant bathroom before parting ways again.

It’s as she’s walking back to her car that she realizes how badly she’s screwed up.

Because her car is surrounded in police tape, and there’s one very angry man wearing a badge standing in front of it with her name on an arrest warrant for killing a man.

Mistakes were made. Repeatedly.

But Detective Haze Hopkins isn’t complaining.

He was ready to quit, anyway.

Crime pays better.

There was right, there was wrong, and then there was the in-between.

The place where normal people reside, understanding that there are two sides to every coin. People that do bad things for good reasons. People that do bad things for bad reasons.

First, I knew that Shasha Semyonov was a bad man. One that did bad things for bad reasons. That didn’t mean that I was rational when it came to him.

He was toxic to my health, yet I wanted him anyway.

They say the first step to healing is admitting when you have a problem.

My problem happened to be six feet two inches tall, two hundred and twenty pounds, and bearded to perfection.

Oh, and he was also the scariest guy I knew.

Meanwhile, I was the laughingstock of the city.

The woman who was cheated on by her boyfriend with her best friend, and it was captured live while a band played in the background, perfectly accenting the humiliating video.

There was no way that Shasha Semyonov would notice me.
Right?

Wrong.

I’d definitely been noticed.
