Desperately Seeking a Duchess by Christi Caldwell
Series: All the Duke's Sins #2
Genres: Historical Romance
What happens when an impoverished duke with a reputation for being a rogue collides with a strong-willed heiress who wants to explore the world? An unlikely friendship...and unexpected passion.
Cailin Audley doesn't fit in with Polite Society. A life spent among the working class taught her to value her independence in a way no newfound fortune or glittering ballroom could ever erase. When a major misstep sees the new heiress whisked away to the English countryside, Cailin soon realizes the vexing lengths her family will go to see her settled. But having risked her heart once before, Cailin has no interest in the men of the ton--especially not the frustratingly charming Duke of St. James.
Courtland Balfour, the Duke of St. James, devoted brother and notorious rogue, despises what he must become--a fortune hunter. But with the ducal coffers drained by his late, spendthrift of a father, Courtland knows his duty lies at the altar and he will do anything to ensure a future for his siblings. Just his luck that the one lady who could make this new fate bearable, who enflames him like no other, is the one woman who wants nothing to do with him or his title.
But when an act of desperation inadvertently lands he and Cailin at the heart of another scandal, Courtland knows better than to waste his chance. Surely he can convince Cailin to love him?

my review
This was an enjoyable historical romance with a strong character-driven focus, even if it took me a little while to fully settle into the story. Once it found its footing, though, I really appreciated the depth and growth of both the main characters.
Cailin is a complex heroine, caught between two worlds as the illegitimate daughter of a duke raised among working-class miners. She struggles to find where she belongs, and that internal conflict shapes much of her early behavior. I’ll admit, she was a bit frustrating at the beginning—particularly in how she handled certain situations without fully considering their impact—but watching her grow, learn, and begin to see beyond herself was ultimately rewarding.
Courtland, on the other hand, is immediately more easy to connect with. Burdened by his family’s debts and responsibilities, he’s doing everything he can to hold things together, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness. Beneath his charming exterior is a genuinely kind and protective man, and I loved seeing that softer, more vulnerable side come out—especially in his interactions with Cailin. His nervousness around her was surprisingly endearing and added a lovely layer to his character.
The romance is very much a slow burn, and while I did wish their connection had developed a bit earlier or with more shared moments, I still enjoyed the way they influenced each other’s perspectives. Their conversations were thoughtful and showed real growth, even if it took time to get there.
The supporting cast added both tension and humor to the story. Courtland’s sisters were certainly memorable—if a bit frustrating—and I appreciated how he handled them with patience and care. It was also satisfying to see both main characters stand up for themselves and begin to take control of their own futures.
Overall, this is a well-written story with strong character development and a rewarding emotional payoff. While the pacing may not work for everyone, I found it to be a solid and enjoyable read that left me curious to see what comes next in the series.
