Insta-Family by Linda Kage | Book Review

Feb. 13, 2022

I was a fan of Lucy's parents when I read their book a few years ago. So I was thrilled when this book was offered to me. I enjoy Laura Kage as an author. She is one of the most well-written authors I have come across.

Insta-Family by Linda Kage
Series: Forbidden Descendants #3
Genres: Contemporary Romance

LUCY GAMBLE, KNOCKED UP BY DYING MAN SHE GAVE SYMPATHY SEX, NOW MOVING ON TO HIS BIG BROTHER.

Have you ever tried to come up with a headline for your life? Well, mine’s so cringeworthy I can’t believe it’s actually my story...or a hundred percent true.

But honestly, how could I say no to the one-night-stand when he begged? Only a monster could deny someone their dying wish, right?

I mean, okay, getting pregnant from the encounter was a regrettable, irresponsible mistake; I can fully admit that.

Turning to his brother, however, was never part of the plan. Initially, I didn’t even like the guy.

Except Vaughn Merrill is a force to be reckoned with. He’s determined to be an “involved” uncle, and no matter how much I tell him he doesn’t have to be so helpful, he’s just so freaking helpful.

And gorgeous.

Plus not at all the ass I assumed he was. Then there’s this massive pain and grief and loneliness I see in his eyes. I just want to hug him constantly and give him the sense of family he so desperately needs.

So really, can you blame me for falling for the one man I know I shouldn’t?

Oh good lord I cried from page of this book. It was hard to get through it without shedding tears. Sometimes they were tears of grief and sadness and other times they were tears of joy. The pain that Vaugh feels is so real that you can feel it in your soul as you read about it. He has lost his entire family. His parents were killed in a car accident years earlier and his brother is dying from cancer in the beginning of the book.

Laura Kage did an amazing job of showing how Vaughn dealt with his grief and loss. He doesn’t comes to terms with his brother’s death right away. There is no quick and easy he’s over it on the next page. He struggles with it with makes him a much better character.

Lucy is the daughter of Aspen and Noel (To Professor, with Love) ho has a one night stand with Vaughn’s brother and gets pregnant. Again Laura Kage did an amazing job with Lucy as well. She feels so guilty about sleeping with Duke but he was dying and asked her to. I mean what do you say to the dying man? then to have her become a single mother and show her struggles with that was just amazing.

As a couple Vaughn and Lucy were amazing and I found myself wondering if his brother didn’t somehow knowingly bring them together. Like he knew that Vaughn would spiral and would need Lucy and his daughter. He would need to feel as though he had someone left.

I loved that we did get to see a lot of the characters from the Forbidden Men series. It gave me some much needed comic relief in the middle of all the crying. Honestly, I’m not sure where to love or hate Laura Kage for all the tears. This was such a wonderful book book but it gutted me as well. In the best possible way though.

About Linda Kage

Linda writes romance fiction from YA to adult, contemporary to fantasy. Most Kage stories lean more toward the lighter, sillier side with a couple of meaningful moments thrown in. Focuses more on entertainment value and emotional impact. She likes the drama and crazy, over-the-top plots that make you cry, then laugh, get mad then sigh happily. Most stories are explicit but a few are sex-free. No dark or taboo topics, but many are not safe stories either.

Published since 2010. Went through a 2-year writing correspondence class in children’s literature from The Institute of Children’s Literature. Got an Associates of Arts degree from Allen County Community College in Iola, Kansas. Then graduated with a Bachelors in Arts, English with an emphasis in creative fiction writing from Pittsburg State Univerity.

She lives with her husband, Kurt, two daughters, Lydia and Sadie, cat Holly, and nine cuckoo clocks in southeast Kansas, USA. Farmgirl. Parents were dairy farmers. Was the youngest of eight. Big family. Day job as a cataloging library assistant.

Harry Potter House Gryffindor, Patronus White Stallion, character match Hagrid. Supernatural Team Dean. Game of Thrones Team Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister. The Walking Dead Team Daryl. Outlander Team Jamie Fraser. Teen Wolf Team Stiles. Avenger Team Thor…or Hulk (can’t decide). Justice League Team Flash. Arrow Team Stephen Amell. Stranger Things obsessed. Heard Laurel, not Yanny.

Started out reading with the Baby-Sitters Club. Then moved to Sandra Brown, Linda Howard, Julie Garwood, and LaVyrle Spencer in high school. Now all over the place with her romance reading tastes.

Sounds like a very well written book I hate when books make me cry but I suppose it’s evidence of a great author. Thank you for sharing this review.

My life is pretty perfect—on paper. I had a string of platinum albums and number one songs all before I hit my twenty-fourth birthday. I’ve got fame and more money than I’ll ever be able to spend. What they say about fame is true: it's lonely up here at the top. The clichés I sing about are true too: all I want is someone who sees the real me and loves me despite all the drama. Then I meet a guy who seems to step right out of my fantasies—grumpy, husky single-dad cowboy—but he won’t even give me the time of day.

Grady

Nothing in my life has ever gone the way I planned. I unexpectedly became a father at seventeen. Before my daughter turned two her mom walked out on us both. The last thing I need is some glitter-soaked pop princess filming a music video on my land and putting stars in my daughter’s eyes. Everything I do, I do for my kid, but Jess makes me want something for myself. Can I risk another woman breaking our hearts?
