"Careful, Sunshine. You can only provoke a feline shifter so many times."

Exiled and hunted for her hybrid blood, Breezy finds refuge with Nightshade Charters, an Australian witness protection program for shifters. But when her grumpy copilot disappears, she breaks the one rule meant to keep her safe: Never return to your old life.

Haunted by his past, Cruz Alejo keeps his distance. But after being paired with the sunny and tempting Breezy, his brooding self-punishment begins to crumble. When he's abducted and thrown into underground fighting pits, he's forced to realize the truth. He'll do whatever it takes to escape and claim the one thing he must have before dying — Breezy's kiss.

When Breezy's rescue mission goes awry, she finds herself bound to the same warlock holding Cruz captive. Her only bargaining chip? A deadly quest tied to an ancient prophecy. Now tangled up with a dangerous yet irresistible shifter, Breezy must decide how far she's willing to go to save Cruz, even if it requires her death.

my review

This was my first book by Ines Gray, and I have to say I was impressed by how different it felt from so many paranormal romances I’ve read.

The first thing that caught my attention was the setting. Instead of the familiar locations that show up in a lot of fantasy books, this story is rooted in Australia, and that fresh backdrop gave the entire world its own personality. Add in witness protection for shifters, witches, vampires, banshees, succubi, and plenty of other supernatural beings, and I was hooked from the beginning.

Breezy was easy to like. She has a bright personality that hides someone who’s fiercely loyal to the people she loves. When Cruz disappears, she doesn’t waste time waiting for someone else to rescue him. She jumps into danger herself, and I appreciated that determination. As the story unfolds, she also begins to realize her own worth, and I enjoyed watching her grow more confident in the choices she made.

Cruz took a little longer to win me over. He’s carrying a tremendous amount of guilt, and it affects every relationship in his life. Once I understood why he kept everyone at arm’s length, his actions made much more sense. Watching him slowly confront his past instead of running from it ended up being one of the stronger parts of the story.

The relationship between Breezy and Cruz was where I struggled the most. I enjoyed their chemistry once they were together, but I wanted a little more development before the main story really got moving. There were hints of a shared history between them, and I found myself wishing I’d been able to spend more time watching that connection build before everything changed.

The supporting cast left me curious about the rest of the series. Kyle brought some much-needed humor to the story, and Journey’s backstory especially caught my attention. I’m already interested in seeing where both of those characters go next.

For me, the world itself was the biggest strength of the book. The combination of supernatural creatures, action, danger, and Australian landscapes made this feel fresh, and that’s not something I get to say very often in paranormal romance.

I’m looking forward to seeing where the Nightshade Shifters series goes from here.
