Murder in the Fens by Clare Chase

Jun. 13, 2019

Murder in the Fens by Clare Chase
Series: Tara Thorpe Mystery #4
Genres: Cozy Mystery

When the body of twenty-year-old Julie Cooper is found – her pockets stuffed full of wilting flowers – in an iron-age hill fort on the edge of the fens, Detective Tara Thorpe and her team are called in to investigate. The evidence points to an illicit affair gone wrong… but is there more to the story?

As always at the Cambridge Constabulary, the case turns personal. Detective Blake is exhausted after the arrival of a new baby with wayward wife Babette, and Tara is keen to put as much distance between herself and Blake as she can – both at the station and on the hunt for the killer. Charming rookie officer Jez is the perfect distraction… but is he a little too good to be true?

Then Tara makes a startling breakthrough when she finds an unsettling family heirloom hidden in the late victim’s bedroom – a golden statue of a sinister-looking cat with emerald eyes. As she traces its origins, Tara begins to realise that Julie’s murder is no one-off crime, but a sinister plot with its roots in a terrible secret that was covered up decades earlier.

An unputdownable page-turner, perfect for fans of Faith Martin, Agatha Christie and Joy Ellis. Can be read as a standalone.

I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A murder mystery that kept me on my toes. I did not see who it turned out to be.

Even though this was the fourth book in the series it is the first one I have read. It was so good! I am a huge Agatha Christie fan and let me tell you that Clare Chase is on par with Ms. Christie. As I said I didn’t see who the murderer turned out to be. In fact, the person wasn’t even one I had considered.

A young woman is murdered and Tara along with the other members of her team are on the case. The way they all work together (or not in the case of Tara and Megan are concerned) was interesting. I loved her dynamic with Blake.

We get almost every team member’s point of view in this book. At first I thought it may be too much but after finishing the book I can see how important it was and how much it helped the story. The only reason I didn’t give this book five stars was because I had wanted a little more from a couple of characters.

I have already ordered all of the other books in the series so look for those reviews coming soon.

About Clare Chase

Clare Chase writes character-driven mysteries set in the East of England, where she’s lived since she graduated with a degree in English Literature from London University.

Her Tara Thorpe and Ruby Fawcett mysteries are out now, and are set in the ancient university of city of Cambridge, but for her next venture – a new cosy mystery series – the action will move to coastal Suffolk. Clare loves the picturesque villages in the county, and the way they contrast with the wild North Sea and its beautiful but eerie estuaries and marshes.

The new series will publish in early 2020 and will feature Eve Mallow, who’s an obituary writer. The idea for her profession came after listening to some fascinating interviews with Margalit Fox, formerly of the New York Times.

In addition to her East of England titles, Clare is the author of a standalone thriller, You Think You Know Me, set in London. The novel was shortlisted for Novelicious’s Undiscovered Award, before Clare was first published, as well as an EPIC award in 2015. It was also chosen as a debut of the month by Lovereading.

Murder on the Marshes (Tara Thorpe 1) is currently on the shortlist for an International Thriller Writers award.

As well as writing, Clare loves family time, art and architecture, cooking, and of course, reading other people’s books.

I enjoy mystery books. I think too sometimes characters are ;eft ‘hanging’ so maybe in their next book they can be explored more deeply. This looks decent.

I loved how Liza and Cassian slowly became part of each other's everyday lives before romance really took center stage. They were so comfortable together and completely made me smile.

Bridger was the Rogue Pack wolf I most wanted to k Bridger was the Rogue Pack wolf I most wanted to know more about, and his story absolutely delivered. We've seen glimpses of him throughout the series—always keeping his distance while still showing up when it mattered most. Finally learning the truth behind his past and the loss he carries was heartbreaking.

Kit was not at all who I expected for Bridger, but she ended up being exactly what he needed. Their story felt a little different from the other books in the series, focusing more on healing, guilt, and emotional growth than outside conflict. I actually loved that change of pace.

The Rogue Pack's matchmaking antics had me shaking my head and laughing at the same time, and as always, the pack dynamics were one of my favorite parts of the book.

A sweet, emotional paranormal romance filled with heart, healing, and one grumpy wolf who finally gets the happiness he deserves. 🐺

I’m right in the middle of reading this but I have I’m right in the middle of reading this but I have to say if you haven’t picked this up yet, run grab it. It is s good and while all the characters are great, Aunt Pip is simply the best side character ever written if that’s possible!

Blurb: I should’ve worn underwear that day.

I’d have far less hate mail in my inbox. I’d also still have a job.

But I didn’t wear underwear. And I had a wardrobe malfunction on a livestream.

So now I’m the proud owner of the internet’s most famous… you know.

The good news? I’ve been invited to hide from my sudden infamy at a closed winery with other women who’ve suffered their own five minutes of shame.

The bad news? The winery has a live-in handyman.

A competent, compassionate, patient, sexy, single dad handyman.

Whom I met when I punched him in the face.

Accidentally, of course. But I still get why he’s happy keeping his distance from me.

But when we find out the winery that’s saving my life is in danger of foreclosure, he and I become accidental partners.

No big deal, working with a guy that I’m falling harder for each day.

I’m already the internet’s favorite punching bag. Why not add an unrequited crush to my life?

But what if it’s not unrequited after all?

From USA Today and Amazon #1 Bestselling Author Pippa Grant comes a funny, heartwarming, swoony romance perfect for readers who love protective book boyfriends, found sisterhoods, slow burns, epically awkward meet-cutes, and love conquering all.

Content note: This book contains toxic family and references to bullying, suicide, abuse, and the off-page cancer death of the hero’s first wife several years before the story begins.

Bring an author to work day just got spicy.

River
I moved to Santa Maria for peace and quiet.
Not for a saucy little bookworm determined to ruin both.
But Jasmine Knudsen is the most infuriatingly stubborn woman I've ever met.
Everywhere I go, she's there, refusing to take no for an answer.
She might be winning because I've never wanted anything the way I want her.
But she isn't interested in being caught…until I don't leave her a choice.
Now, we aren't playing her game. We're playing mine.
And when a future with her is on the line?
There's nothing I won't do to win.

Jasmine
I read smut, and I know things. It's what I do.
What I don't do is back down.
So when local romance author, River "I'm Too Good for Your Book Club" Jamison, refuses to come speak, I declare war.
He thought I was kidding when I swore to annoy him until he agreed.
I wasn't.
I thought he was joking when he threatened to have me arrested.
Turns out, the big grump wasn't kidding, either.
Now, he's refusing to drop the charges unless I go out with him.
And I must be losing it because I'm not saying no.
But I did not expect to become the main suspect when his latest manuscript goes missing.
Which means I might end up right back in jail.
Only this time, it's not just my freedom at stake.
It's my heart, too.
