The Bodie Island Lighthouse Library Classic Novel Book Club is reading Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne while workers dig into the earth to repair the Lighthouse Library's foundations. The digging halts when Lucy pulls a battered tin box containing a Civil War-era diary from the pit. Tucked inside is a hand-drawn map of the Outer Banks accompanied by a page written in an indecipherable code.
The library is overrun by people clamoring to see the artifact. Later that night, Lucy and Connor McNeil find the body of historical society member Jeremy Hughes inside the library. Clearly Jeremy was not the only one who broke into the library--the map and the coded page are missing.
Lucy's nemesis, Louise Jane McKaughnan, confesses to entering the library after closing to sneak a peek but denies seeing Jeremy--or his killer. When Lucy discovers that fellow-librarian Charlene had a past with Jeremy, she's forced to do what she vowed not to do--get involved in the case. Meanwhile, the entire library staff and community become obsessed with trying to decode the page. But when the library has a second break in, it becomes clear that someone is determined to solve that code.

I hadn’t read any of the previous book s in this series. I have to say having a library in a lighthouse sounds like a dream come true to me. Not to mention Charles the cat is awesome! The library is working on the foundation and getting repaired while reading Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne.
In the middle of the work going on the foreman comes demanding that Lucy and Bertie come to the site. Something has been discovered and no one will touch it until they have seen it for themselves. The ladies discover a box with a small diary inside. The diary only has the tides and weather for each day listed in it. 2 pages have fallen out, one which is a map and the other is written in some sort of code.
This sets the mystery up nicely and everyone wants to see the papers. If that isn’t enough one of the historians is found dead in Bertie’s office. The map and coded paper are missing. Lucy was such a wonderful character and I loved this book so much. It is another one of those I am so glad I took a chance on and will be reading the previous in the series.

Reading this post has made me ask myself, “Why don’t I read cozy mysteries?” I used to love reading Lilian Jackson Braun, but that was so many years ago. I remember that they were quick and wonderful reads, and of course I love cats! I’m glad to have found this post. 🙂
