The Golden Oldies’ Book Club by Judy Leigh | Book Review

Dec. 30, 2022

This was such a wonderful read! I can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this book. I love that the women are older and realizing that you're never too old to love.

The Golden Oldies' Book Club by Judy Leigh
Genres: Womens Fiction

Ruth the librarian fears she’s too old to find love, but a discussion about Lady Chatterley’s Lover makes her think again.

Aurora doesn’t feel seventy-two and longs to relive the excitement of her youth, while Verity is getting increasingly tired of her husband Mark’s grumpiness and wonders if their son’s imminent flight from the nest might be just the moment for her to fly too. And Danielle is fed up with her cheating husband. Surely life has more in store for her than to settle for second best?

The glue that holds Combe Pomeroy together is Jeannie. Doyenne of the local cider farm and heartbeat of her family and community, no one has noticed that Jeannie needs some looking after too. Has the moment for her to retire finally arrived, and if so, what does her future hold?

From a book club French exchange trip, to many celebrations at the farm, this is the year that everything changes, that lifelong friendships are tested, and for some of the women, they finally get the love they deserve.

I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

We begin with Jeannie who is seventy-two and living with her  ninety-five-year-old mother Violet. She also has her teenage grandchildren staying with her as they are finishing up school. She has a lot going on but one bright spot is her book club at the local library.

In the club we have Ruth, the librarian, who is lonely and yearns for more. Then there is Verity who is having some trouble in her marriage while Danielle’s marriage is ending after her husband’s affair.  Not to mention poor Aurora whose heart was broken long ago and she has yet to recover.

The ladies decide to take a book club trip to France and get a breather from their troubles. They support one another and when they get back they begin to tackle their problems one at a time. We get to follow along on their journey of discovering that you are never too old to make new friends, find love or simply learn to live.

This was such a wonderful read and I will say that I enjoyed it so much. It deals with everyday life and the things that we all have to face as we get older. What it gives us though is a lasting friendship and the will to step out there and face your dragons head on.  It was light hearted and great fun!

I have never heard of her as an author but I have to say, I love that it is facing so many aging challenges. My neighbors husband passed last year, leaving her at 72 and the on thing she said is that she misses everynight someone there to to hug her and kiss her goodnight and tell her they love her.

Holly Lorena Cain, formerly known as Georgina Lorena Cain, was well acquainted with rock bottom. She’s coasted along its rocky shores for years. It all started when her mother left her when she was barely old enough to understand. For years, her and her dad struggled to make ends meet. A dying cattle farm can’t run itself, and with her dad having cancer, it got harder and harder to hang on to land that’s been in her family for generations.

Just as she thinks that she’s finally made it, her father passes away and leaves every single thing he owns to their neighbor. The man that’d been worming his way into her father’s good graces while she’d been away pursuing higher education.

But she can’t be mad.

Being mad would mean that she has a soul left, but she sold that a long time ago to pay for college.

Once she comes to terms with her father and the land being gone, she moves back to Bear Pass and with one thing on her mind—avoid Denver at all costs. He can never know just how much it hurt that he stole her life away from her.

Only, he makes it impossibly hard to stay away.

He’s there around every corner. He offers her a place to stay. Makes sure she has a place to work. Fixes her car. Saves her from a kidnapper. Oh, and gives her everything her heart desires.

She stays away as best as she can, but she doesn’t stand a chance against Denver’s determination and charm. He’s there when no one else is, peeling her off the floor and propping her back up again each time she falls.

The gruff motorcycle club president with his scary glares and harsh work ethic has decided to make her his, and he won’t stand for her refusal.

He’s been protecting her for her entire life, and she doesn’t even know it.

He won’t stop now, even if she’s bound and determined to stay away.

My landlord is broad-shouldered, permanently unimpressed, and entirely too comfortable telling me
when I’m wrong. I think he’s grumpy, rigid, and overprotective. He thinks I’m chaos in Crocs.
Falling for Josh Lawrence was never part of the plan.
But then he starts showing up.
For my son when he’s overwhelmed.
For my daughters when they need someone steady.
And for me when my hands won’t stop shaking.
I didn’t come to Vermont looking for a protector. I don’t need rescuing. But somewhere between harvest
festivals, pumpkin canoe races, and quiet mornings in the sugar shack, the man I swore was just an
annoyance becomes my safe place.
And when my dangerous past resurfaces and threatens the new life I’ve built, the grumpy maple farmer
next door becomes my fiercest protector, ready to stand by my side while I fight for my family.

Because it turns out maple farmers are a lot like their trees: quiet, stubborn, and surprisingly sweet
when the pressure builds.
