Look Deeper by Abbie Zanders | Book Review

This is the first book with the children of the Callaghan series and let me tell you I could not be more excited. I have been a fan of Abbie Zanders for years. She was one of the first authors I read when I began using Kindle unlimited. I have been hooked ever since. The characters she writes are so well thought out and she makes it so easy to fall in love with every single leading men. I can't wait for Kane's daughter (my all time favorite orginal series character) to get her own book. I can only imagine the kind of man that will have to take on Kane to have her.Look Deeper by Abbie Zanders | Book Reviewfive-stars

She came to Pine Ridge to lie low. He made that impossible.

Morgan Sullivan is a medicolegal death investigator on forced administrative leave — punished for refusing to close a case that didn't add up. She drives north to wait out the storm with the grandfather she barely knows, in a small Pennsylvania mountain town she's never visited.

She doesn't expect to like it there.

She definitely doesn't expect him.

Patrick Callaghan has his father's charm and a gift for seeing patterns where other people see noise. He's never had to wait for a woman to notice him. Until now.

What neither of them knows is that the cool stranger who dismissed him without a second glance is GraveDigger — his online investigative partner of two years. And the charming small-town PI she can't quite shake is DeepTrace — the person who understands how her mind works better than anyone she's ever met in person.

When a dead man turns up on Sullivan land under deeply suspicious circumstances, their investigations collide — and so do they. The deeper they dig, the more dangerous it gets, and the harder it becomes to pretend that what's building between them is anything less than inevitable.

She came to Pine Ridge to figure out her next move.

She didn't plan on him being it.

Look Deeper is a standalone romantic suspense novel and the first book in the Callaghan Next Generation series.

my review

Patrick had me hooked almost from the moment he walked onto the page.

Morgan isn’t exactly thrilled to be forced into taking time off from work, so heading to her grandfather’s farm feels more like an obligation than a break. Then she stops for coffee, accidentally spills it all over a handsome stranger, and the day only gets more interesting from there.

That stranger is Patrick.

I loved these two together because nothing about their relationship felt forced. Patrick is patient, kind, and quietly persistent. He never tries to sweep Morgan off her feet with grand gestures. Instead, he simply shows up when she needs him. Morgan isn’t someone who wears her heart on her sleeve, but she isn’t closed off either. She just needs time to trust the people around her.

One of my favorite parts of the story was Morgan’s relationship with her grandfather, Frank. They barely know each other, yet there is an easy connection between them that grows stronger with every chapter. Those quieter family moments balanced the suspense perfectly.

Of course, it wouldn’t be romantic suspense without a mystery.

When a body is discovered on the land behind Frank’s farm, Morgan’s investigative instincts kick in immediately. Patrick finds himself drawn into the case right alongside her after discovering the notebook she accidentally leaves behind. Together they begin asking questions, uncovering old secrets, and realizing the truth is much closer than either of them expected.

I enjoyed the way the mystery unfolded because every answer seemed to lead to another question. The romance never took a backseat to the investigation, and the investigation never overshadowed Patrick and Morgan’s growing relationship. The two stories worked together beautifully.

This is exactly the kind of romantic suspense I love reading. A couple worth rooting for, a mystery that kept me guessing, and characters who felt like real people instead of just names on a page.

About Abbie Zanders

Abbie Zanders is a wife and mother of three (including a set of identical twins), born and raised in the mountains and valleys of Northeastern Pennsylvania. She has a degree in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. Though she has spent the last 25+ years developing financial software for healthcare-based companies, she has also held second jobs as a pub waitress, a restaurant dessert baker, a secretary, and a bread shelf stock girl.

Hobbies and interests include romance novels (all genres), 80’s hair bands and heavy metal, muscle cars, and really big dogs.

A voracious reader, she carries both a Nook and a Kindle with her at all times, as well as several mini-sized notebooks to jot down ideas when inspiration strikes. Writing is a life-long pursuit; it began somewhere in elementary school when she used to secretly draft scripts for then-popular TV shows, writing herself in as a main character, of course. Things have changed a lot since then – she now focuses on love stories for mature audiences – but her passion for writing remains the same.

She is both grateful and honored to be able to share her stories with those having a similar penchant for love stories, and promises her readers two things: no cliffhangers, and always happily ever afters.
