Review
Doris Flies Solo is the sixth book in the Broken Wings series, which follows the Air Transport Auxiliary. This was my first read in the series and once I got into the story, it was enjoyable. I will admit that it would have been better if I had read the previous books to get more familiar with the characters.
Doris has recently married and is leaving her injured husband behind to embark on a secret mission to Scotland. At first, she’s in the dark about the details, but she gets pulled deeper into the mission’s secrets. Not only is Doris a top-notch pilot, but she also drives with the speed and skill that leaves her escorts struggling to keep up! Tasked with transporting a British General and his aide-de-camp, Doris finds herself navigating not only dangerous skies but also the complexities of military deception meant to confuse the Nazis.
Doris is a bold character that I think a lot of women in the war were. She is smart and funny and I loved her! As a history buff thanks to my father I also loved that this is based on real events. The historical context adds a layer that made this book all the more compelling and good.
