All he ever wanted was to matter to someone.
What he didnโ€™t know was that he did matter to someone.
Someone that worried about him every single day that he was gone.

Malachi Gabriel Gnocchi was missing for two years. Thanks to a mission gone wrong, not only had he been captured, but his best friend along with his fellow teammates had been taken, too.

He spent two years in hell, hoping and praying that one day heโ€™d get to go home.

And one day he does. Only, he isnโ€™t the same person that left. Every single thing that made him Malachi is no more.

Sierra started writing to soldiers overseas through the soldier pen pal program when she was in high school. Years later, she had no idea that the one soldier that sheโ€™d been paired up with in the very beginning would be the one man that would change her world eight years down the road.

When the letters from her soldier stopped, she knew that something bad had happened.

When they started back up again two years after the last letter, she thought that someone was playing a joke on her.
Only, that joke wasnโ€™t a joke at all.

The man on the other end of those letters is a man thatโ€™s dying slowly from the inside out.

Heโ€™s a living, breathing mess and thereโ€™s only one thing she can do to help him.

Write him back and hope that she can bring him back from the edge.

I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Okay, this book blew me away! I mean there was so many things I felt during this particular one. First of all, I have been waiting for Malachi’s story for a while. He was once a POW along with his friends. One friend was mistaken for him when he was found and when Malachi was actually found and rescued he came back a broken man. One who isn’t sure where he fits into the world any longer.

This story could have been so sad and so broken but I loved that Lani Lynn Vale gave us a story that allows us to feel Malachi’s pain but not pity him. It would have been so easy to fall into that knee-jerk response of pity but she created a character who is stronger than what has been done to him. One who we want to see have everything he deserves in life.

Sierra and Malachi first “met” when she was still in high school and began writing to a soldier in her English class. That soldier is Malachi. Even after she graduated she kept writing. They got to know each other without all the fakeness or pretending that we do when we are getting to know someone. They became best friends. When Malachi went missing, she kept writing hoping that he was okay. Then one day, out of the blue, her English teacher reaches out saying she has a letter.

These two together could not have been more perfect! How they never met before when they do is beyond me. I mean he works with her father and brother. They were within reach of one another so many times through so many different people. What actually brought them together though, made me cry. Could there have been a more perfect moment? I’m not telling y’all because you really have to read it for yourselves.

I loved Malachi’s grandmother. She was so funny and the voice of reason at times. She certainly had no problem speaking her mind about any and everything. She was simply awesome. I enjoyed getting a different glimpse of Zach and I’m hoping everything that happened means he’s going to be getting his own book soon. Although I will say was flabbergasted by all of it.
