Mystic Bonds by CC Solomon | Book Review

Feb. 24, 2024

In the debut of a paranormal series, the story unfolds in our world where people acquire supernatural traits, including werewolves, mages, and more, leading to a woman gaining witchy powers. However, the plot reveals a conflict with normal humans seeking to capture these supernaturals for their blood to create a serum for temporary powers. While the book has some drawbacks, such as predictable plotlines and underdeveloped characters, its brisk pace and action scenes leave readers curious about potential improvements in subsequent installments.

Series: Paranormal World #1

Mage Amina Langston thought surviving the supernatural apocalypse, which killed fifty percent of humankind and changed most of the surviving population into paranormal beings, were the biggest challenges in her life. That is, until she and her brother go on the run from non-gifted humans who want to steal their magical blood to make a power-giving serum. Now she’s in search of a handsome stranger who keeps appearing in her dreams and a secret paranormal city to help free those still held in captivity for their blood.

During her journey, Amina befriends several other magical beings also searching for the mysterious town, including a sexy were-jackal who distracts her from locating the man of her proverbial dreams. However, when the group finds the city, it’s filled with dangerous magic and a barbaric were-pack. Facing these new troubles, will Amina take down her human pursuers and save the other paranormals she left behind or end up in greater peril?

In this first installment of a paranormal series, the narrative unfolds in our world, where a woman’s life takes a drastic turn as people begin exhibiting supernatural traits for unknown reasons. The emergence of werewolves, mages, warlocks, witches, fairies, vampires, and more accompanies her newfound witchy powers. However, the story reveals that normal humans seek to capture these supernaturals for their blood, intending to create a serum granting temporary powers.

While the book is passable, some characters come across as flat, with only two or three receiving more thorough development. The plot follows predictable lines, featuring noticeable gaps, and lacks a detailed explanation for the event triggering latent powers. The magic system lacks complexity and internal logic, and both dialogues and romantic elements fall short of expectations. Despite these shortcomings, the book maintains a brisk pace, offering entertainment through action scenes and leaving readers intrigued for potential improvements in subsequent installments.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 Stars A bookstore owner stalks an author. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 Stars

A bookstore owner stalks an author.

The author threatens to call the police.

Then actually does.

Somehow this turns into a romance and I loved every minute of it. 😂

Jasmine and River were chaotic, stubborn, funny, and completely perfect together. Their banter carried this entire book for me.

Also, River trusting Jasmine when everyone else was questioning her? That man knew exactly who she was.

A town full of lovable busybodies ✔️

I loved how Liza and Cassian slowly became part of each other's everyday lives before romance really took center stage. They were so comfortable together and completely made me smile.

And Alaric's formal complaint? I laughed so hard I nearly spit out my drink. 😂

I cannot wait for the next trip back to Blackthorn Bay!

Bridger was the Rogue Pack wolf I most wanted to k Bridger was the Rogue Pack wolf I most wanted to know more about, and his story absolutely delivered. We've seen glimpses of him throughout the series—always keeping his distance while still showing up when it mattered most. Finally learning the truth behind his past and the loss he carries was heartbreaking.

Kit was not at all who I expected for Bridger, but she ended up being exactly what he needed. Their story felt a little different from the other books in the series, focusing more on healing, guilt, and emotional growth than outside conflict. I actually loved that change of pace.

The Rogue Pack's matchmaking antics had me shaking my head and laughing at the same time, and as always, the pack dynamics were one of my favorite parts of the book.

A sweet, emotional paranormal romance filled with heart, healing, and one grumpy wolf who finally gets the happiness he deserves. 🐺
