Stephanie and her sister are attacked and unwillingly turned into immortals and Stephanie gains the ability to hear others’ thoughts. However, unlike other immortals, she can’t turn it off. To help her cope, her new family sets her up in a remote house, thinking isolation will give her peace. But they don’t know her powers are much stronger than she lets on; she can still pick up some thoughts from people nearby.
Thorne is the result of his father’s twisted DNA experiments, designed to create children with unique abilities. With wings and feathers on his head, he’s hoping for a way to remove them and live a more normal life. When he moves into the empty cabin next to Stephanie’s, she’s surprised that, for the first time, she can’t hear someone’s thoughts—a strange change that makes her fear she could be heading down a dark path toward madness, like others who turned into no-fangers before her. But she keeps these fears to herself, even from her sister.
Despite Thorne’s insecurities, Stephanie’s warm, bubbly personality puts him at ease, and their connection is instant.
