Through the Ashes by Emmie Elms | Book Review

Dec. 05, 2025

If you love emotional, character-driven romances that walk the line between heartbreak and hope, Through the Ashes is the kind of story that grabs your heart from page one. This book takes readers deep into the painful aftermath of unimaginable loss and slowly guides them toward the warmth of healing, connection, and second chances. It’s tender, raw, and deeply human—perfect for readers who want a romance layered with real-life grit and grace.

When everything burns away, what remains?

Andie Harris had it all—a loving marriage, a fulfilling job, and dreams for their future together. But in the blink of an eye, tragedy claims the one she holds most dear.

Left with nothing but ashes and memories, Andie finds herself trapped in grief. Lost in her new reality, unable to find her place again. She’s surviving but not living.

When Andie takes the step to rebuild herself with her new life, she doesn’t realize she’ll be facing her toughest battle yet: finding love in the most unexpected place at a vulnerable time.

Andie must decide whether to remain in the ashes of her past or open up her heart to love again with the risk that she could lose it all for a second time.

Will she honor her past and find her way without giving her heart to another? Or will she open her heart and allow the void to be filled?

my review

Through the Ashes is a heartfelt, emotional journey about grief, renewal, and rediscovering the possibility of love after devastating loss. Andie begins this story believing she has everything she ever wanted—until her world collapses with the sudden death of her firefighter husband. The author manages to capture that moment of life-shattering grief with compassion and authenticity, making Andie’s heartbreak feel incredibly real.

With the help of her fiercely loyal best friend Maddie, Andie relocates to Chicago in search of a fresh start. It’s here, in the slow rebuilding of her life, that she meets Spencer—a protective, tender hero who slips into her story when she least expects it. Their connection is instant but not rushed; it’s intense in a way that speaks to Andie’s need to feel alive again, yet still gentle enough to honor everything she’s lost.

I appreciated the way this book navigates the complicated emotions of moving forward after tragedy. The guilt, the fear of judgment, the internal battle between holding on and letting go—all of it was explored with sincerity. Andie and Spencer’s chemistry is undeniable, bringing both heat and hope to the page as they learn how to build something new together.

While some parts of the story follow familiar romantic beats, the emotional depth and the strong themes of friendship, healing, and renewal make this a rewarding start to the Life in Waves series. I’m already eager for Maddie’s book and to follow the rest of these characters as their journeys unfold.

About Emmie Elms

I write steamy contemporary romance novels that’s sole goal is to make you feel everything– the butterflies, the heat, and all the beautiful chaos in between. I live in Kansas with my own romantic hero and our children. When I’m not working or enjoying family life, I can be found sneaking off to write and creating new characters to dream about.

A bookstore owner stalks an author.

The author threatens to call the police.

Then actually does.

Somehow this turns into a romance and I loved every minute of it. 😂

Jasmine and River were chaotic, stubborn, funny, and completely perfect together. Their banter carried this entire book for me.

Also, River trusting Jasmine when everyone else was questioning her? That man knew exactly who she was.

I loved how Liza and Cassian slowly became part of each other's everyday lives before romance really took center stage. They were so comfortable together and completely made me smile.

And Alaric's formal complaint? I laughed so hard I nearly spit out my drink. 😂

I cannot wait for the next trip back to Blackthorn Bay!

Bridger was the Rogue Pack wolf I most wanted to k Bridger was the Rogue Pack wolf I most wanted to know more about, and his story absolutely delivered. We've seen glimpses of him throughout the series—always keeping his distance while still showing up when it mattered most. Finally learning the truth behind his past and the loss he carries was heartbreaking.

Kit was not at all who I expected for Bridger, but she ended up being exactly what he needed. Their story felt a little different from the other books in the series, focusing more on healing, guilt, and emotional growth than outside conflict. I actually loved that change of pace.

The Rogue Pack's matchmaking antics had me shaking my head and laughing at the same time, and as always, the pack dynamics were one of my favorite parts of the book.

A sweet, emotional paranormal romance filled with heart, healing, and one grumpy wolf who finally gets the happiness he deserves. 🐺
