Each month I enjoy highlighting a couple of authors whose work has caught my attention, whether they are longtime favorites or writers I’m planning to explore for the first time. Sometimes these spotlights come from books I’ve already loved, and other times they come from authors who have steadily appeared on my reading radar through recommendations and conversations with other readers.
May’s spotlight falls into that second category. Both of this month’s featured authors are writers whose books I’ve seen mentioned often enough that it finally felt like the right time to give them a closer look. One writes light, flirty contemporary romance that readers often describe as charming and easy to fall into. The other brings history and mystery together in thoughtful, character-centered novels set against the backdrop of World War II.
While I haven’t yet read either author, both are firmly on my list for the months ahead.
Stephanie Archer
Contemporary Romance
Stephanie Archer has quickly become a familiar name among readers who enjoy playful, feel-good contemporary romance. Her books are often praised for their humor, engaging dialogue, and characters who feel warm and approachable from the very first chapter.
Much of Archer’s work takes place in small towns or close-knit communities, settings that naturally lend themselves to stories where relationships grow slowly and characters become part of each other’s everyday lives. Readers often describe her books as the kind of romances that are both comforting and entertaining — perfect when you want a story that’s lighthearted but still emotionally satisfying.
A couple of titles that frequently appear as reader favorites include:
- That Kind of Guy — A small-town romance known for its charming dynamic between the main characters and the playful tone Archer is becoming known for.
- Behind the Net — The first book in the Vancouver Storm hockey romance series, blending sports romance with humor and strong character chemistry.
Stephanie Archer’s books seem like the kind of stories that are easy to pick up and difficult to put down, and I’m looking forward to finally stepping into her world of romantic comedies and heartfelt connections.
Susan Elia MacNeal
Historical Mystery
May’s mystery spotlight goes to Susan Elia MacNeal, author of the Maggie Hope series — a collection of historical mysteries set during World War II. Her novels follow Maggie Hope, a brilliant young woman who moves from working as a typist in the British government to becoming involved in espionage and intelligence work during the war.
What makes these books particularly intriguing is the way they blend historical detail with mystery and character development. Readers often note that MacNeal’s writing brings the era vividly to life while still delivering engaging investigations and emotional depth.
Two books that appear frequently as recommended starting points include:
- Mr. Churchill’s Secretary — The first book in the Maggie Hope series, introducing the protagonist and the wartime world she navigates while becoming entangled in a dangerous investigation.
- Princess Elizabeth’s Spy — A later installment in the series that continues Maggie’s work in British intelligence while expanding the historical scope of the story.
Historical mysteries often offer a unique blend of storytelling — part puzzle, part history, and part character study — and Susan Elia MacNeal’s books seem to capture that balance beautifully.
Looking Ahead
May’s spotlight highlights two authors whose books I’m eager to discover for the first time. Both write stories that appear to blend engaging characters with immersive settings, whether through lighthearted romance or historically rich mysteries.
Part of the joy of reading is the simple act of discovering new authors and seeing where their stories lead. I’m looking forward to finally opening one of their books and seeing how their worlds unfold on the page.
