Ambitious and determined, Clara hopes to serve as a driver, preferably a dispatch rider near the front lines, or at least as an ambulance driver. As a no-nonsense non-commissioned officer, she quickly takes charge when she and a group of women arrive at the station without transportation to their ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) base. Clara gets them organized and starts marching them the couple of miles to the base, only to be met by a rude driver when the transport finally arrives. When he bumps his head, Clara takes over, driving the lorry for the first time and successfully leading her group to the base. Her resourcefulness and determination set the tone for her journey in the military.

This book is a well-researched and captivating portrayal of the lives of young women in the war. It provides a slice-of-life perspective, focusing more on the day-to-day experiences of women like Clara rather than following a traditional plot. While there’s a subtle romance woven into the story, the focus remains on Clara’s military service and her aspirations. I found it to be an entertaining and heartfelt read, and I absolutely loved it!
